چکیده

This paper presents results of spatial and temporal analyses of hydro-climatic regimes and simulation of climate-induced hydrologic changes in the Lake Winnipeg watershed. The hydrologic and agricultural chemical yield model, Soil & Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), was employed for the simulation of hydrologic scenarios in the Upper Assiniboine catchment of the Lake Winnipeg watershed, Canada. Analyses of future climate projections from three regional climate models (RCMs) corresponding to the SRES's A2 emission scenario, indicate that the total annual precipitation will increase by 5.5-7.5 % in 2041-2070 compared to 1971-2000, while temperature will increase by 2.02.9° C during the same period. Hydrologic scenarios simulated with the SWAT model project consistent changes in future snowmelt driven runoff, with an earlier onset of spring snowmelt and discharge peaks. Some of the results also show increases in discharge peaks. These changes can be expected to have implications on water availability and nutrient transport regime in the Lake Winnipeg watershed.

Modelling cyanobacteria dynamics in urban lakes: an integrated approach including watershed hydrologic modelling and high frequency data collection

Urban lakes performed several essential functions for the cities such as storing rainwater and providing recreation spaces. Blooms of cyanobacteria frequently occur in these lakes, disrupting water uses and decreasing ecosystem biodiversity. In order to study the impacts of watershed changes on cyanobacteria dynamics in urban lakes, a modelling approach in which an ecological lake model is conn...

Advances in the Integration of Watershed and Lake Modeling in the Lake Winnipeg Basin

Estimating non-point source pollution from watersheds and the effects of mitigation measures (e.g. beneficial management practices or BMPs) is an important step in managing and protecting water quality, not only at the basin level where it originates, but also at the receiving waters such as reservoirs, lakes or oceans. Lake Winnipeg is a prime example of such land-lake interactions, where eutr...

An integrated approach for urban water modelling, linking a watershed hydrological model and a cyanobacteria dynamics model in urban lakes

In the future, the frequency and the intensity of cyanobacteria blooms in urban lakes are expected to increase in response to climate change and expanding urbanization. In order to study the impacts of watershed changes on cyanobacteria dynamics in urban lakes, a modelling approach, in which an ecological lake model is connected to a hydrological watershed model, is proposed. To validate this a...

Scenarios to Investigate the Effect of Wetland Position in a Watershed on Nutrient Loadings

Lake Winnipeg is Canada’s 6th largest freshwater lake and is subject to an increasing rate of eutrophication as a result of nonpoint source pollution from numerous sources including farms and municipal wastewaters. We examine scenarios designed to compare the relative effects of wetland restoration and position on modelled nutrient loadings to Lake Winnipeg from a pilot watershed in the Lake’s ...
